So, what are the benefits of bar association membership? Depends on who you ask. For most, it’s a great way to connect with other attorneys, have access to discounts to a variety of businesses, and work to improve the community. But, beyond that, how do members actually, in daily life, get benefits from membership? There are more than you may think. But you have to take an active approach if you want to get the most out of membership.

Networking Opportunities

Lawyer Referral Services

Bar associations make it easier for prospective clients to find you. Nearly all bar association websites have an attorney directory for public use that helps users find lawyers for specific types of legal matters. Membership automatically lists you in the directory so that clients who are looking for an attorney in your practice area can search for you. To make the most of it, add that listing to your LinkedIn profile and your website, if you have one. Think of it as an additional promotional outlet for your firm.

Committees and Special Events

There are so many options here! But to make the most of it, you have to actually go. And, maybe, get involved. Many bar associations offer a variety of topic groups. From solo/small firm groups to General Counsel, these groups serve the unique needs of their members. They offer a platform for open discussion and generate new ideas. You will be able to meet other legal professionals with common issues and opportunities. As they say, two heads (or more!) are better than one.

As a member of a bar association, you have access to events. From job fairs to social events, the variety and regularity give you a real opportunity to grow your network, and work on your leadership and communication skills. But remember, you have to actually get involved.

Beneficial Programs and Meetings

Continuing Legal Education (CLE)

Legal bar associations offer a continuing legal education (CLE) program. These seminars, workshops, and classes create dispense learning opportunities across topics. And, classes are available live and some on video. They teach useful skills to members like law office management and technology. Not only do CLE events enhance your skill set, but they also ensure that you keep up with license requirements. Beyond the required CLE, you can really keep up-to-date on the latest trends in the industry.

Discounted Programs and Perks

Many bar associations offer discounts to services you need. From consulting programs to website development and maintenance, many associations have negotiated lower rates for their members. So, save money on resources that expand your practice. Even more, you can actually approach your association and ask for specific topics.

Many associations give their members the chance to publish articles. That’s another great way to grow your firm, awareness, and practice. Check with your particular association to see what they may do.

Online Resources

Online Legal Research Libraries

And, some memberships offer access to legal research libraries. That can be local, state, and federal. But, again, you need to step up to to take advantage of it. You will be happy to find that bar associations are very happy to help you get access, and even develop new benefits. But, again, you have to step up.

Online Software Platforms

So many bar associations offer discounts to online case and practice management platforms and other software solutions. The best associations offer a variety of platforms, not just one. Because not every practice needs the same type of software. So if your association only offers a discount on one platform, ask for more.

Get the most out of your bar association membership dues. To do that, you have to get involved. And, for the benefits that you really like, make sure you tell your association. Because, as we all know, it’s nice to feel appreciated.
